Goldilucks and the Three Marketing Gurus: Part 1

Once upon a time,

Three Internet marketing gurus shared a quaint cottage up in the Adirondack Mountains. They loved it up there. The air was clean and crisp, the view was spectacular, and best of all, there was nobody around to bother them while they worked on their next moneymaking ventures.

Hype Guru was the oldest.

His aggressive nature made him the natural leader of the group. Hype specialized in big ideas, which led to big products that made big amounts of money.

Hype also made big promises to people who signed up for his programs. He promised them big paychecks, lavish lifestyles, and just about anything they could possibly dream of. He was good at spinning tales of wealth and riches that could only be obtained by the lucky few who bought his program for several healthy dollars and some change.

Hype didn’t care that his programs never delivered what he had promised. His main concern was getting as many people to buy his program as possible. This made Hype very happy and very rich. After all, if those people couldn’t figure out his claims were full of hot air – that was their problem.

Greedy Guru was the second oldest.

He loved money and looked up to Hype as a role model. However, Greedy’s style was a bit different. He was too lazy to put all the work into making up a lavish program that made big promises. Instead, he went for the quick and easy buck.

Greedy specialized in creating “spam farms”. He created software that spidered web sites for email addresses, which he would then sell as “hot name lists” to unsuspecting newbie marketers.

Of course the newbies didn’t make any money from his lists and would often get into trouble for spamming people, but Greedy didn’t care about that because he made a pretty profit from the whole scheme. Greedy got away with it because he never did business under the same name for very long.

Smart Guru was the youngest.

Unlike the other two gurus, Smart didn’t want to make money from big, empty promises or spam schemes. He liked making money, but he didn’t love money the way the other two did. Money was simply a means to an end and allowed him to live a lifestyle that was pleasing to him.

Smart didn’t have enough money yet to strike out on his own, but he knew that if he kept doing things the “right” way, he soon would. Smart was friendly and outgoing and felt that an honest day’s work deserved an honest reward.

Smart created small mini web sites that sold his information products.
He’d spend months researching his subject to make sure he was providing the best information possible. He didn’t charge much for his special information and was happy to answer people’s questions or give them a refund.

One day the three gurus decided to go out for a walk. The gurus decided to take a long hike on their favorite trail, which went through the forest and down into the village. There, they’d sit and relax while drinking café lattes and watching the local tourists.

As the three made their way down the path singing merrily, they weren’t worried about leaving the door unlocked and their computers on. Nobody came up there anyway. Why worry?

An intruder finds refuge.

Goldilucks had been hiking the trail up the mountain for hours and had become tired and hungry. She’d eaten all her trail mix and her water was almost gone. She really needed to stop somewhere and rest, but where? There was nothing up here but trees and endless forest.

Why didn’t she listen to her friends when they told her she shouldn’t hike this trail alone? Especially one she’d never been on before? Now she barely had enough energy to take one more step.

Just as she was about to give up and sit down by a tree, she looked up and saw a quaint cottage, partially obscured by trees, only a few feet away! Goldilucks couldn’t believe her luck. She quickly sprinted over to the cottage and knocked on the door.

Goldilucks stood there knocking for several minutes, but no one came to the door. She was extremely disappointed at this turn of events. Finally she had found a nice place to crash, but no one was home. She started to turn away, but stopped. Why should she give up so easy?

Maybe the owners were away on vacation and had left a key under the mat or something. She didn’t want to move in, just rest for a little while.

Goldilucks checked under the doormat, but found no key. Out of frustration she turned the doorknob and to her surprise – it opened! The owners had left the door unlocked. What luck.

When Goldilucks looked inside, she immediately knew two things: 1) The owners weren’t on vacation, and 2) This was no ordinary family cottage. Despite her better judgment, she decides to go inside and take a look around.

In Part 2 – Find out what happens when Goldilucks discovers the secret moneymaking plans of the three gurus.
